Uses for Anise Seed Oil

Anise is most recognizable for its taste which resembles black licorice. It is part of the parsley family, the seed oil is a staple item in the aroma therapists arsenal and the plant is a staple in many kitchens.
Before we get into the many benefits of anise seed oil there are precautions that need to be taken. Anise seed oil should never be used by individuals who are pregnant, have been diagnosed with endometriosis or who have estrogen dependent cancers. Recommended doses should never be exceeded as anise seed oil has been known to cause stomach irritations and dizziness.
Anise seed oil is collected by steam distillation from the seed of the plant and can be safely used for many therapeutic applications. Following are a few suggestions:
1. Anise seed oil is very effective as a digestive aid. It helps alleviate flatulence (gas), nausea, and indigestion. Simply use 2 or 3 drops of the oil in a steam inhalation and breath it in. This method will also get rid of hiccups.
2. If you are suffering from stomach cramps, massage a mixture of 4 to 5 drops of anise seed oil and one tablespoon of almond oil into your abdominal area.
3. For aliments affecting your breathing or lungs such as asthma, bronchitis, colds or coughs you can use two separate applications including a steam inhalation with 2- 3 drops of anise oil or massage into your chest a mixture of almond oil and 5 drops of anise seed.
4. To help rid your sleep of bad dreams mix anise seed oil and chamomile and use in a diffuser.
5. To help with migraines or vertigo use in a steam inhalation, diffuser, or place 2 or 3 drops on a piece of cloth and periodically inhale.
6. Anise seed oil can also be used as a mouth wash, add 2 drops in warm water, simple gargle, swish and spit out (do not swallow).
7. Adding a couple of drops to a carrier oil will give you an effective solution for muscle aches and pains. Simply massage the mixture into the affected area (this is also helpful for menstrual cramps).
As always experiment and have fun. Remember adding different essences together can give you double the benefits.
