Choosing an essential oil depends on if you are choosing for pleasure, for therapeutic benefits or both. If you are looking for specific healing properties then there will be specific essential oils to use. It is important to know however you will be generally able to choose from a variety as many of the oils have over lapping or similar beneficial properties. This is where the fun comes in because if you do not like the scent of a particular oil you can find another that is more pleasing for you to use and still get the benefits you are after.
There are many different applications for essential oils depending on what your desired effects are or what you personally enjoy. Here is a brief list of the most popular:
1. Aromatic baths are very popular, and they are a treat for all your senses. The general rule of thumb is to add four to eight drops of your essential oil of choice to your bath water. Ensure that you have mixed the oil in by hand you do not want the droplets to be sitting in a clump on the surface of the water. Do not add your essential oil into the running water as this will cause the scent vaporize before you are ready to get in and enjoy.
2. For an invigorating aromatic shower put a couple of drops of essential oil on a face cloth or puffer and scrub yourself down. Be careful not to get it in your eyes! Rinse as normal and enjoy your day.
3. Essential oils can also be used in a foot or hand soak. The concept is the same as a soak in the bath instead you are just giving your hands or feet a treat. Again make sure that the oil is mixed well into water, then just sit back and enjoy.
4. Essential oils can also be added to compresses both hot or cold. They are assembled in a similar manner the only difference is the temperature of the water. Add and mix a couple of drops of the appropriate oil to water (temperature of choose). Allow your cloth to soak in the mixture for a couple of minutes, wring out and use.
5. Make yourself a massage oil. Simply add two or three drops of the essential oil of choice to one ounce of carrier oil (again your choice) and it is ready to use.
Essential oils can also be added to shampoos, conditioners, lotions and creams, just make sure you add them to non scented products.
6. There are a few direct applications however this should be done with caution by anyone unfamiliar with essential oils. These oils although natural they are very potent, many will cause damage to the skin when applied neat. With that being said it is quite safe to smell the oil directly from the bottle or by placing a couple of drops on a Kleenex to get a quick pick my up.
7. Diffusers are very popular. There are several different ways to effectively diffuse either the scent or the oil particles into the air. If you are looking to vaporize the scent of your favorite oil into the air then use a simple scent diffuser which is basically involves a lamp ring or tray and a heat source which can be a candle or light bulb. If you want to distribute the oil particles themselves into the air them you will require a particle diffuser or humidifier.
This is only a short list of the ways you can use essential oils. Use your imagination and come up with your own recipes, you can not really go wrong if you use common sense.
