Citronella essential oil has a scent that most individuals are familiar with as it has been touted as a insect repellant particularly mosquitoes. This strong aromatic essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from a grass found in Sri Lanka known as Cymbopogon winterianus. Citronella is actually a very versatile oil which has many useful applications.

As mentioned earlier it is well known as an insect repellant including fleas, mosquitoes, and moths. To protect your dogs from fleas simply add two or three drops to a collar or piece of cloth and place it around your dog’s neck. Citronella can be used however to keep unwanted cats out of your yard and garden by strategically spraying areas with a mixture of Citronella essential oil and water.

Citronella can also be used in applications for daily care uses. For instance adding a few drops of the essential oil to a carrier oil will give you a very effective under arm deodorant. In addition the very same application can be used to treat oily skin, use the same mixture and apply to your face with a cotton ball.

Citronella essential oil can also be used for a few other applications when needed. If you are suffering from digestive issues try massaging your abdominal area with a mixture of two or three drops of Citronella essential oil and a couple of tablespoons of your favorite carrier oil. If you are experiencing a headache or migraine or are just mentally exhausted use two or three drops to a compress, hot or cold which ever you prefer. Citronella can also be used as an antiseptic for minor infections.

The key to using Citronella essential oil is to use it in small quantities as the scent can be very over powering. If used properly this essential oil has a very clear and uplifting quality which can be a very effective refresher and help you to clear your mind. To use as a mood elevator use in a diffuser or in a lamp ring, to create a subtle scent.
