Eucalyptus Essential Oil Uses

A Herbs, Health and Harmony CFor many individuals when they here about the Eucalyptus tree they immediately think of the Koala bears in Australia, however Eucalyptus has been utilized for centuries as a healing agent and antibacterial. Today eucalyptus is used around the world in medical products for humans and animals alike. Many individuals will have used over the counter products that contain eucalyptus including cough medicine, decongestants and vapor rubs.

Eucalyptus essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves (fresh or partially dried) and young twigs of the tree Eucalyptus globulus. This essential oil can be utilized for numerous therapeutic applications including:

1. Eucalyptus essential oil has a distinctive menthol aroma which makes it a desirable choice to combat asthma, sore throats, coughs, sinus infections and congestion. To use, add several drops of the essential oil to your vaporizer or massage your chest with a mixture containing one ounce of your favorite carrier oil and 2 or 3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.

2. Eucalyptus essential oil is considered a powerful antibacterial and can be used in several applications. To kill airborne bacteria spray area with a mixture containing one quart of water with approximately ten drops of essential oil. This same mixture can be used to disinfect surfaces or you can alternatively put several drops on a cloth or paper towel and place in areas you wish to kill germs or odors.

3. A massage oil can be used to relieve pain associated with arthritis, rheumatism or general muscle pains. For this application massage affected area with a mixture containing one ounce of your favorite carrier oil and approximately 3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.

4. Eucalyptus essential oil can be used to repel insects through a couple different methods. To repel house flies place several drops of the essential oil on a cloth and hang in window or place on window sill. Eucalyptus can also be mixed with bergamot, lavender, and a carrier oil to apply to skin.

Although eucalyptus is safe to use it should be avoided if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure or have been diagnosed with epilepsy.
